private T1 ---------- My CIO recently purchased
a private T1 line from a
remote office to our
corporate office in order
to have access to digital
video at the remote
office to post on a
webserver at our
corporate office.
He purchased a Cisco
2610 router with a T1
trunk card, without an
IOS that supports VPN.
He wants to use a
software VPN such as
WindowsNT PPTP
software, which I see as
a waste of time due to NT
4.0 not supporting
IPSEC.
I have
setup VPNs using Alta
Vista Tunnel software in
1997 for remote users
accessing the corporate
network from the internet
for my previous
company. I could see a
need for a VPN in that
scenario to protect
connections from the
internet and to only
allow
authorized connections
to the network. However,
I fail to see the need
for a VPN on a private
T1.
Does anyone
have any recommendations
as to the necessity of
creating a VPN on top
of this private line?
Any input is greatly
appreciated!!

there is no need for a
VPN. The only reason for
a VPN is if it's a public
T1 and you don't have a
direct connection. Then,
if you don't want people
to snoop your traffic,
you can use VPN to keep
your traffic
private. Is this
really a private T1?
