Nortel Extranet Client 4.10
----------
I am running XP Pro. Had to do some reinstalls lately and when I tried to reinstall the client, it says "Failed to get registry key for NT_IPSECSHM:" and then a folder that has long since deleted by the office tech people who were unable to resolve this problem.
I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this and I REALLY don't want to reinstall the OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

clear registry
----------

Have you tried searching NT_IPSECSHM on registry? Coz you don't actually need this directory, so to search for it when you found it, delete it! so once you run XP pro again, it will create a IPSEC compatible to your system...

Tried that

I tried that and a number of other things. No matter what I did in the registry, it still threw the same error. I ended up reinstalling the OS this morning. From what I've seen on the usenet, that seems to be the only solution.

Trouble Shooting Guide:

“Failed to get registry key value for NT_IPSECSHM: System\CurrentControlSet\ ENUM\ROOT\NT_IPSECSHM\000 0\Driver. Click OK to continue.

1. T he software is either downloaded from the internet, an intranet, or installed using media such as a cd-rom. Go to the directory on your computer where the VPN client software is located. Ex: c:\VPN (This is where I had downloaded and unzipped the program files.)
2. Execute the installer file. This file is named “setup”.
3. Choose the default settings for all otions, unless you require fine-tuning. Choose: NEXT – YES – NEXT – NEXT – “Install and run as application (default)” – NEXT. The machine will install the program files, the drivers, and create the icons and shortcuts. Choose: NEXT – Restart (yes) – Finish. And the machine will reboot. This is the normal way it installs.
4. If you encounter a problem during the installation of the driver files, it will look like this: “Failed to get registry key value for NT_IPSECSHM: System\CurrentControlSet\ ENUM\ROOT\NT_IPSECSHM\000 0\Driver. Click OK to continue.
5. The next screen will read: “The extranet access client IPSEC adapter installation has failed due to an inconsistency in the registry. Please contact Nortel Networks customer support organization with this problem. Please indicate the registry entry which resulted in the error.” Click OK to continue.
6. The installation program will exit and you are returned back to the desktop where you started the program.
7. Start the registry editor by going START – RUN – REGEDT32.
8. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – System – CurrentControlSet – ENUM – ROOT – NT_IPSECSHM
9. Permit yourself to perform changes to the registry by ensuring that NT_IPSECSHM is highlighted and choose SECURITY – PERMISSIONS.
10. The permissions for the key will appear. Ensure that “Everyone” is highlighted, and check the box next to “Full Control” under the allow column. Click OK, and now you are able to make changes on this key and it’s sub-keys.
11. Select the Key “0000” below NT_IPSECSHM, and you will be presented with all the details concerning the IPSEC adapter.
12. Check the details pane at the right. You will notice the absence of the entry “Driver : REG_SZ : {4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1- 08002BE10318}\0008
13. This line is essential to link the driver to the adapter. With the “0000” highlighted in the left pane, choose EDIT – Add Value. Enter “Driver” as the value name, and make sure that REG_SZ is the data type. Choose OK to proceed.
14. Highlight the “Driver : REG_SZ : “ in the right pane, choose EDIT – STRING from the menu. Enter the value: {4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1- 08002BE10318}\0008 in the field for “value”. Click OK to proceed.
15. Since all registry changes are made real-time, you do not have to reboot. Close the registry editor.
16. Again, go to the directory where your VPN files are stored and run the “Setup” file. The procedure will run through it’s course and all files, drivers, and icons will be installed.
17. Reboot the computer when requested. Upon restarting, you will be able to continue setting up the client for connectivity to network.
18. Smile – This wasn’t as easy to solve as it sounds.
