2000, XP) ---------- Hi, I'm completely new
to VPN technologies and
I'd like to know if there
are a free VPN client
(IPSec compatible) that
would work on windows NT4
AND 2K with FreeSWAN on a
linux server ? If not,
do you think that a
solution using PPTP or
LT2P should be better
? My goal is to
connect by VPN windows or
linux clients to a Linux
VPN server (linked by a
cisco 1700 series router)
using free solutions and
modifying less as
possible the clients. Any
help would be very very
appreciated. | phildom Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-04-06 16:30:14 VPN client ---------- There is a built in
client in most of the new
Win OS's. ie WinXP,
Win2K, WinME. What
OS's are you looking to
run this free client
on?
| Pierre Member since: 2002-04-05 06:32:45 | posted: 2002-04-08 02:43:05 OS used ---------- The problem is that the
solution must be generic
enough to work with
different OS like Windows
NT, 2000 and maybe
Windows 98 (and linux)
without having to change
all the configuration on
these machines ! I know
it may be difficult to
find the right way but
this is the ideal target.
Also I heard about
problems with the free
VPN clients implemented
with Windows OS because
freeSWAN uses 3DES (i
think) and you must
install service pack 2 on
Windows 2000 machines, is
that right? Another
question is that I don't
know if it is possible
for VPN clients on the
same Local Network to
communicate using IPSEC
without encountering
troubles ?
According to
VPN-masqueradeHOWTO:
"The IPsec protocols
define a method for
identifying the traffic
streams called the
Security Parameters Index
("SPI"). Unfortunately
the SPI used by outbound
traffic is different from
the SPI used by inbound
traffic, and there is no
other identifying
information available
that is not encrypted, so
association of the
inbound and outbound data
streams is difficult and
not perfectly reliable.
"
I'm sorry to ask
many many questions but I
don't know how to start
because I'd like to start
on the right way. Thank
you phildom for your
help
