Linksys? ---------- I have a quick question
to a complex problem. I
have roughly 6 different
friends at 6 different
locations. At each
location there may be up
to 5 people on different
computers. Each private
network is behind a
linksys DSL router. Each
location has a static ip
address for the router.
Here is what I want to
do. I want to put
EVERYONE on the same
network. IE: 192.158.0.x
will be one of the 20
some-odd computers on the
network. I would like to
accomplish this task with
less than a $150
investment. Is this
possible? I have NO
interest in setting up a
dedicated VPN server at
each remote location. I
understand that the
LMhosts file can be
tweaked to allow each
computer to connect to
the ROUTERS...but how to
I allow the computers to
access one another BEHIND
the routers as each
computer does not have a
real ip address (only the
router-assigned ips).
Therefore, can you type
in the LMhosts file
something like [computer
ip]@[router ip]...how to
you access the computer
VIA its ip BEHIND the
router...is it even
possible? Essentially, is
there ANY inexpensive
way...to attach 5
networks together accross
the internet without (A)
expensive VPN solutions
(B) complex setup
(C)dedicated lines (D)
huge amount of hassle? I
have a feeling that the
answer is "no", but I
must ask anyway. Further,
I might add that I have
MAC & PC computers on
these networks...a simple
switch of the LMhosts
file will not solve my
problem...because the MAC
computers don't have
LMhosts files. In
conclusion, I want to
know if STATIC routing
will solve my problem.
Can I simple specify an
IP address of another
router and "connect" the
two associated networks
together? Otherwise, is
there a VPN solution that
will not break the bank?
Thank you for your time. | christian Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-01-11 17:35:08 Re: Creating a cheap VPN
with Linksys? ---------- You can configure your
Linksys routers to do
VPN. Check the online
product page for
directions on unlocking
the devices. | Lonestar Member since: 2002-01-17 09:16:11 | posted: 2002-01-17 09:22:24 Same situation... ---------- Did you ever happen to
get this to work? If so,
I'd like to know how. I
can't figure out how to
get my Linksys router set
up for VPN sessions,
although I really only
need one at a time. I'm
just getting into the
whole networking thing,
so it's all a little new
to me. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. | phildom Member since: 2001-11-20 10:00:00 | posted: 2002-01-24 13:22:35 Linksys VPN ---------- I'm in the process of
putting together some
resources for a Linksys
VPN implementation. I'll
post back and let you
guys know when I'm done.
Are you all using the
Linksys BEFVP41 VPN
Router?
Phil | Lonestar Member since: 2002-01-17 09:16:11 | posted: 2002-01-24 13:47:11 Linksys VPN solution ---------- I'm using the BEFSR41
model, it can only handle
1 VPN session at a time,
but that's all we'd ever
need. |
