Ethereal
Ethereal is a free network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, viewing summary and detail information for each packet. Ethereal has several powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session.
Firewalk
Firewalking is a technique developed by Mike D. Schiffman and David E. Goldsmith that employs traceroute-like techniques to analyze IP packet responses to determine gateway ACL filters and map networks. Firewalk the tool employs the technique to determine the filter rules in place on a packet forwarding device. The newest version of the tool, firewalk/GTK introduces the option of using a graphical interface and a few bug fixes.
Hping
hping is a command-line oriented TCP/IP packet assembler/analyzer. Performs the following:Firewall testing, Advanced port scanning,
Network testing, using different protocols, TOS, fragmentation,
Manual path MTU discovery,
Traceroute like, under all the supported protocols,
Remote OS fingerprinting,
TCP/IP stacks auditing
IPLog (3/1/01)
iplog is a TCP/IP traffic logger. Currently, it is capable of logging TCP, UDP and ICMP traffic. iplog 2.0 is a complete re-write of iplog 1.x, resulting in greater portability and better performance. iplog 2.0 contains all the features of iplog 1.x as well as several new ones. Major new features include a packet filter and detection of more scans and attacks. It currently runs on Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, BSDI and Solaris. Ports to other systems, as well as any contributions at all, are welcome at this time.
John the Ripper
A password cracker, currently available for UNIX, DOS, Win32. Its primary purpose is to detect weak UNIX passwords.

AnalogX delivers a small and easy-to-use TCP/IP protocol monitor for measuring how fast your network connection is. Works with dialup, Cable modems, DSL and even your LAN.
Nmap
Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (ports) they are offering, what operating system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers, and both console and graphical versions are available. Nmap is free software, available with full source code under the terms of the GNU GPL.
